Child behavior and development in the Alpujarra

For children who need support with communication, independence, routines, and participation in everyday life.
Based in Órgiva, serving the Alpujarra.

About me and how I work

I am Antonio Reina Hidalgo, a psychologist qualified to provide healthcare services in Spain and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®). I have worked in Spain, the United States, and Qatar in clinical, educational, residential, and home-based settings, primarily with children with autism and developmental concerns.

Antonio Reina Hidalgo, psicólogo y analista de conducta certificado BCBA®.

How I work

I work with families, professionals, schools, and other organizations to better understand a child’s behavior and teach practical skills related to communication, independence, daily routines, and participation at home, at school, and in the community. I also provide supervision for professionals pursuing credentials in applied behavior analysis.

My work begins by listening to the family: what concerns them, what happens at home, at school, or during daily routines, what has already been tried, and what the child needs in order to make progress. From there, I define specific goals and assess the conditions  that support or interfere with learning. A diagnosis can provide useful guidance and help families access certain services, but it does not by itself explain what is happening in a particular situation and should not become a limitation. For that reason, my work focuses on the child in context and on building practical skills for everyday life.

Approach and goals

My work is grounded in both rigor and care. Teaching should build on the child’s interests and be motivating, with gradual steps and real-life opportunities to use what has been learned. The goal is to help the child become more independent, participate more fully at home, at school, and in the community, and ensure that families and professionals work toward shared goals.

Services

What can we do together?

We work with families and professionals through consultations, visits, training, follow-up, and coordination. Together, we look at what is happening in each situation, identify priorities, and decide on the next steps. All services are available in Spanish and English.

Families

The first step is to understand the situation clearly: what concerns you, when the difficulty occurs, what has already been tried, and what changes might help your child in everyday life.

Initial consultation

We can begin with an in-person or online consultation to understand the situation and agree on the next steps.

Home, school, and community visits

When a difficulty occurs mainly at home, at school, or during a particular routine, an in-person visit can help us understand what is happening and try practical changes or strategies in the setting where the issue occurs.

Coordination with schools and other professionals

If your child receives support from school staff, therapists, caregivers, or other professionals, we can coordinate with them to share goals and use a consistent approach.

Professionals, service providers, and organizations

We support professionals, service providers, and organizations with needs ranging from consultation on a specific case to practical training and supervision, using applied behavior analysis as our professional framework.

Case consultation for professionals

Consultation on complex cases to clarify goals and coordinate supports using an applied behavior analysis framework.

Workshops, presentations, and collaborative projects

Practical workshops and training for families, professionals, associations, universities, local agencies, and teams in the early stages of training.

Credentialing supervision

Supervision for students and professionals pursuing BACB®, QABA®, or IBAO® credentials. We review requirements and documentation and develop a plan tailored to the credential, the competencies to be developed, and the candidate’s current stage.

(*) Case consultation and credentialing supervision are available online to professionals and teams regardless of location.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during the initial consultation?

During the initial consultation, we discuss your concerns, gather basic information, and determine whether Habilidades Alpujarra can help.

The consultation may include an initial interview, a review of available information, and preliminary guidance on priorities. From there, we can determine the most appropriate format: consultation, in-person visit, online follow-up, coordination, or referral to another provider.

Please indicate whether you are contacting us as a family member, a professional, or a representative of a school, clinic, or organization; your town or municipality, or your country if you are outside Spain; the general reason for your inquiry; and whether you prefer in-person or online services. If your inquiry concerns a child, include the child’s approximate age. For credentialing supervision, also indicate which credential you are pursuing and where you are in the process.

There is no need to send reports, names of schools or providers, or detailed clinical information in your first message.

I primarily work with children age 12 and younger.

I may also see older children when the concern involves behavior, functional communication, independence, routines, participation, or coordinating supports in specific settings.

You are welcome to get in touch even if your child does not yet have a diagnosis. I primarily work with concerns related to autism and child development, particularly when they affect behavior, communication, independence, or everyday routines.

The assessment focuses on understanding what is happening in everyday life, what has already been tried, and which skills would be helpful to teach.

Not every case requires weekly services. Sessions may be weekly, every other week, monthly, or scheduled as needed, depending on the goals and the current stage of the work.

We can also combine in-person and online services or schedule brief follow-up sessions once services are underway.

Habilidades Alpujarra is a specialized service focused on child behavior and development. We work with families, caregivers, organizations, and professionals through consultations, visits in everyday settings, training, follow-up, coordination, and professional consultation.

Our work focuses on reducing everyday difficulties and challenging behavior while helping children develop functional adaptive skills. Situations we address include difficulty moving from one activity to another or accepting changes or limits, resistance to routines such as getting dressed, personal care, eating, leaving the house, going to school, or completing tasks, sleep-related difficulties, and challenging behavior such as frequent or intense tantrums, damage to materials or objects, or aggression. At the same time, we teach skills that help children respond more flexibly to everyday demands, communicate their needs, play, participate in family activities, and become more independent in everyday routines, including toilet training.

Functional assessment guides the work. Together with the family and other people in the child’s life, we look at what is happening in each situation, set priorities, decide which skills to teach, and identify changes or strategies that may be most helpful.

Active participation by the family and the people who support the child is essential. Together, we set specific goals, put strategies into practice in everyday life, and review how they are working so that everyone can work toward the same goals across home, school, and other important settings.

Our model differs from that of a multidisciplinary clinic providing ongoing therapy. Habilidades Alpujarra can complement educational or therapeutic services the child already receives.

We do not provide medical diagnoses, prescribe or recommend medication, or provide dietary, supplement, or nutritional guidance.

Another provider may be more appropriate when the child needs medical care, a specialized diagnostic evaluation, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, mental health services, early intervention, a specialized educational program, or other ongoing services.

No. Habilidades Alpujarra does not provide tutoring or homework help as a primary service. When a school-related difficulty involves behavior, communication, independence, routines, or participation, the work focuses on the skills needed to participate more successfully in school and everyday activities.

When written documentation would be useful, we determine which type of document is most appropriate.

A brief report is usually prepared after a home or school visit. It summarizes the context and reason for consultation, information shared by the family or professionals, what was observed, and recommendations based on the assessment.

A comprehensive report is intended for situations in which the family needs a more detailed document to share with a school, another professional, or an organization. It brings together information from multiple interviews, visits, or coordination meetings, explains in greater detail what is happening, and outlines the goals, procedures, and recommendations. It may help coordinate services, document the need for an intervention, or provide supporting information for financial assistance, educational grants, or private insurance reimbursement.

These reports are intended for observation, follow-up, and guidance. They do not replace diagnostic, administrative, educational, or healthcare reports issued by the appropriate professionals or agencies.

Coordination with schools, professionals, caregivers, or other direct support providers requires consent from the family or the child’s legal guardian.

No identifying information is used in general professional consultations. If we need to review records, observe the child, or provide individualized recommendations, we obtain the appropriate consent.

Current fees and basic payment terms are listed below.

A Guide to Financial Assistance, Grants, and Reimbursement is also available as a general resource for families. The guide does not replace official information from the relevant program or organization, since each program, grant, or reimbursement arrangement has its own requirements. Habilidades Alpujarra provides an invoice for services rendered and, when appropriate, prepares written estimates and reports.
